Guest Blogger: Krista

Hi everyone! I cannot tell you how excited I am to be guest blogging for Gladys! My name is Krista Wallden and you can find me over at my little blog, The Creative Chalkboard. I have been a {HUGE} fan of Gladys for a long time. She is super sweet for letting me guest and share some freebies and ideas with you that are perfect for starting off the new school year.

I am new to the bloggy world and have been so inspired by all you fabulous bloggers. My blog is a mix of all things elementary with lots of ideas that can be used in different grade levels. Throw in my Creative Clips digital clipart, fonts, and a touch of crazy and you have The Creative Chalkboard. I taught first grade last year and I’m moving to third grade this coming year {in a week and a half!!}.

Today I wanted to give you some {Freebies} that you can use to in your first days of school, because I know we are all in major Back-to-School mode. I don’t know about you, but I am always looking for quick go-to’s that give my kiddos phonics practice. I came up with these little sheet strips called Monster Vowel Chompers. It may sound crazy, but the minute I give my students an activity that is on a half-sheet of paper, foldable or mini book- they LOVE it- no matter what! It is like a magical disguise for an otherwise “worksheet activity.”

Here's a couple Vowel Chomper Sheets to show you what they look like:

Just copy and cut down the middle. Saves paper too!

Students write words with a long or short vowel sound next to the correct monster. There are five different sheets- a, e, i, o, u. They are super easy to use as a word center and have students find words in the room. I have also used them as a quick warm-ups during reading groups and give students a short list of words (could be words from our spelling lists or words that incorporate a specific word chunk) and they divide them up in the correct groups. I have also assembled the half-sheet books with all five pages (plus the cover) and given them to students at the beginning of a week. Then, they fill in words in the whole book for the entire week- during morning work or for early finishers. If this sounds like something you could plug into your day or use as simple formative assessments, you can snatch them up {HERE} for free.

Second thing I have for you is a {HUGE} freebie- shows you just how excited I was to guest for Gladys!! I am offering up my Back to School: Colorful First Days Unit to all of you followers for the next TWO days for {FREE}!

I love brand new crayons and was so inspired by all the rows and rows of brand new crayons in stores during back to school sales that I made a “first days of school” mini unit where crayons are the stars of the show! This unit has a crayon box themed All About Me/Time Capsule Book, a bunch of icebreaker activities (color and crayon themed of course!), a simple craftivity, and a fun surprise message from The Colorful Crayon Collector!

Here’s a little preview of my colorful unit! This is a 30-page packet, so only some of the pages are shown below. Hurry and click {HERE}to snatch it up for free over at my little TpT store while you can! After that, it will go back on sale for $4.00.
I hope I have left you with a few ideas that might make your first days back a little easier! I’d love for you to hop over to my blog and check out more free materials, fonts and clip art!

Hope everyone has fun and “colorful” first days of school! Thank you Gladys for letting me pop in and share with you guys!
