Math Work Stations

When I first started teaching I read Debbie Diller's Literacy Work Stations...as a matter of fact I still read it when I find myself needing a refresher course on literacy centers. I liked her book so much that I created my literacy centers based on her work...I am so excited that she has now come up with a Math Work Stations...you can now preview the entire book on Stenhouse Publisher's website...here. I can't wait to read the book in it's entirety. I'm sure it's awesome!

She Hiccupped a Snowman!

Don't you love these cute little snowmen?

My Firsties created these adorable little fellows after reading this book:
I read the book to them, then as a class we created a tree map of the different items the Cold Lady swallowed...
(forgot to take a picture of it...ughhh!!! Don't you hate when that happens?!)
Anyway, after we finished with the tree map my firsties, then had to write a reader's response to the story...and draw the "hiccuped" snowman. They loved it!
Here are some examples of their writing:

I'm so proud of them! I think they're writing is fantastic!
I love the fact that by doing this activity we are addressing a multitude of skills...we are reading, writing, and creating art...all at the same time!

Well...that was fun!
We are also working on some penguin and MLK activities...so I'll be blogging about that later this week.
Until then....toodles!

And for those lucky people enjoying snowdays...I really envy you! ♥
Have fun and enjoy!

Playing with Google Docs

Okay bloggie friends...I've been playing with Google Docs...and finally have posted a Penguin Bubble Map...here it is...I hope some of you can use it.

I do have a question...which is easier to use: Scribd, Google Docs, or Doc Stoc? I am interested in creating activities and sharing them here on my blog...
Which is your favorite to use?

Penguin Poem

I'm getting ready to create a Penguin Mini-Unit for my firsties...we will start learning about Arctic animals next week...here is a cute poem they'll definitely have fun learning.

I Know a Little Penguin

I know a little penguin

Who sat on some ice blocks.

He lived in the Antarctica

And he climbed on some rocks!

He snapped at a walrus,

And he slid on the ice.

Then he snapped at a whale,

That wasn't very nice.

The penguin was hungry

He didn't need a dish.

He jumped into the ocean

To catch him some fish.

Isn't this little guy the cutest penguin you've ever seen?! You can find him in Brooke Perry's Penguin Sense Activity.
Chalk Talk has a fabulous Penguin Unit...you must check it out!
Really Roper shares some Penguin Songs found on You Tube...that are too cute!
Oceans of First Grade Fun has a Penguin Fact book...
Sarah at First Grader at Last...made the cutest penguin counters!

Enjoy!

Wonderful Resources

So the New Year has come...and I am absolutely ready for the 2nd semester of the school year. I can't wait to do many of the winter activities I have found here in blogland. Blogging teachers are awesome!
Anywho, I wanted to post these terrific websites I came across while browsing the web.
Here you can find many literacy games...with skills ranging from sight words, long vowels, compound words and contractions. All the games are printable and readily available to use in your classroom. Meltdown is an example of one of their games.
Examples of literacy stations can be found here. This site has pictures galore! For all you visual people out there...this is for you!

Aren't these pictures fabulous?!
This last website is a 1st Grade Wiki...they have great resources and links to other awesome blogs. Click here to go to their site...you won't be disappointed, I promise!

Examples of work found on this wiki...fabulous!

I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year with their students...have a great week! ♥
