Apple Unit Part 1

It's finally feeling like fall here in South Texas...61 beautiful degrees...I actually had to go back and get my light denim jacket this morning...I absolutely looove this weather. Anyway...today we kicked off our apple unit, my Firsties were sooo excited!
In honor of Johnny Appleseed's birthday we will do lots of fun apple related activities this week. On Friday we will finish off with an apple party...so fun! Today we started with the reading of some apple books and poems...we then created an apple circle map (pictures to be posted tomorrow...since I forgot to take pictures today)...and finally sang Happy Birthday to Johnny Appleseed.
My class and I are really enjoying our apple unit...and we can't wait to do some more apple activities! I'll leave you with some of my favorite apple books...Enjoy!

Independance Day

Today my class celebrated the 16 de septiembre...most of my students are of a mexican/hispanic descent...and today we celebrated Mexico's Independance Day. We made a circle map to learn about the concept, a venn diagram to compare and contrast the 16 de septiempre to the 4th of July, and then we had a feast! What is a good celebration without great food? This is what the menu consisted of:

yummy tostadas

conchas de pan dulce

to quench our thirst...good ole Capri-Sun juices!

♥♥♥ Needless to say my Firsties loved the celebration. ♥♥♥

Feliz Dia de la Independencia Mexico!

Hope Floats

At my school there are three 1st grade teachers...that might be changing soon...hopefully. I have 21 students...and let's just say that I really hope we get a new teacher...one child proves to be a handful daily...with 20 other children to teach it has been quite challenging. I know that even if we do get that 4th teacher we oh so desperately need...my challenging child will stay in my classroom...(he was moved to my class as soon as my principal found out about his special needs). But I do have to say it would be much easier with 15 or 16 little bodies...instead of the 21 that I now have...so please...please say a little prayer for me...that we may get that 4th teacher...soon.

The Last Song

I just finished watching the movie...and I loved it! Miley Cyrus played a great part...and I can't say enough of Greg Kinnear. I also totally fell in love with the song...When I Look At You. If you haven't seen the movie...you should...it has a great storyline...but don't forget your box of tissues you're going to need them!

Fall is in the Air

I can't help but feel renewed as the beginning of fall is almost here. One can feel it in the air...the temperature has dropped (not drastically as it is still in the high 90s here in south Texas!)...the colors are changing, and the overall mood is becoming more autumnish (I know, I know leave it to a 1st grade teacher to come up with their own silly words!)...still I'm so glad fall is almost here. Don't take me wrong I loooove summer...but one can only take so much of this heat...Anywho I'll leave you with some inspiring fall photos...♥

And I really can't wait to start wearing some of these type of clothes...

D.O.T. Book

Today my Firsties were sooo excited to be getting their DOT Book...DOT is an acronym for Daily Organizational Tools. I believe that good organizational skills need to start early because ultimately these are the skills that will lead to a successful academic life...and I'm absolutely thrilled that my kiddos will be uber organized with their DOT Book this year.
Within the binder are 5 sections: Reading Log, Parent/Teacher Communication, Homework, Papers to be Left at Home, and Papers to Bring Right Back. The different sections will help my Firsties become organized and effective...there will be no more lost homework! That is what I'm hoping at least!
If anyone is interested in the DOT Book Rules leave a comment with your e-mail address and I'll be sure to send it your way. Happy Organizing!
